NEC again dominates BCIA awards

NEC has once again dominated the British Construction Industry Awards, which was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 12 October 2016. Projects procured by NEC3 contracts won 8 of the 13 main awards, including both the major building and civil engineering project categories.

The £75 million Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour at University College, London – which was procured using the NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) Option A – won the Major Building of the Year Award (over £50 million). The judges described it as, ‘poetic and pragmatic, a very worthy winner’.

On the civils side, Thames Water’s £675 million Lee Tunnel in Barking, Essex won the Major Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (over £50 million). The new sewage tunnel was procured using ECC Option C, which is also being used on the £2 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel it will connect to in 2023. The judges said, ‘relentless pursuit of innovation makes this project exemplary’.

ECC Option A was used on Devon County Council’s £110 million South Devon Highway, which won the Community Engagement Award and was highly commended for the major civil engineering category, as well as on Denbighshire County Council’s £5.6 million West Rhyl coastal defence phase 3, which won the Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (up to £10 million). South Tyneside Council also used ECC Option A for its £11 million Hebburn Central community library and sports facility, which won the Low Carbon Construction Award.

London Underground used a variety of ECC and NEC3 Engineering and Construction Short Contracts on the £32.6 million Baker Street to Bond Street tunnel remediation, which won both the Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (£10 to £50 million) and the Health and Safety Award, while ECC option A was used to deliver the slip roads of the new Gloucester Services on the M5, which won the Natural and Cultural Heritage Award and was highly commended for Building of the Year Award (£10 to £50 million).

In total NEC contracts delivered around 73% of the combined £1.3 billion value of the award-winning projects.
