NEC Contracts in Latin American Spanish

NEC Contracts are now being translated into Latin American Spanish, along with user guides and training courses, following an agreement with the Peru Government.

Agreement with the Peru Government

In 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Peru Government, NEC Contracts and the UK Government for the NEC suite of contracts to become the country’s preferred contract framework for infrastructure projects. An official translation of the NEC4 Contracts into Latin American Spanish is being developed in collaboration with The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) of Peru, along with the provision of a comprehensive training programme for its professionals in the delivery of construction and infrastructure projects in Peru.

Mechanism of collaboration

Under the Government-to-Government agreement (GtoG) between the UK and Peru, the UK provides technical assistance to support the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects, with the transfer of UK expertise into the Peruvian public system. The adoption of NEC Contracts allows risks and gains to be distributed proportionately among parties, which established a mechanism of collaboration, trust, accountability and transparency.

The Translation and Implementation of Standardised Contracting: The Partnership with MEF, Peru

NEC Contracts in Peru

NEC contracts were first used in 2017 for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games and have since been deployed for various major infrastructure projects across Peru valued at over $9 billion to date. These have demonstrated the benefits of collaborative contracting, including improved project delivery times and enhanced quality standards.

NEC Contracts translated into Latin American Spanish

The NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) is the first one to be translated into Latin American Spanish and released in April 2025. It is the main contract in the NEC4 suite and has been developed as a collaborative, flexible and clearly written contract to be used in the engineering, building and construction industries. In addition, a series of training courses on using NEC contracts will be available in Spanish, starting with Introduction to ECC, which provides a comprehensive overview of the NEC4 ECC contract, breaking down its key components for new users.
